Having never heard Jelly Roll Morton speak, this was a fascinating listen. Looks like it is the first disc of an 8-CD set released in on Rounder Records. Some of the recordings may be available from the Library of Congress or the Lomax site, but Rounder seems to have really cleaned up the audio quality.

In his recordings at the Library of Congress, sessions that were implemented by historian Alan Lomax, Jelly Roll Morton spoke of his early influences, one of which was described as thus: among the first blues that I've ever heard, happened to be a woman, that lived next door to my godmother's in the Garden District.

Jelly Roll Morton created history when he sat down with Alan Lomax to record the Library of Congress recordings in Never before had an artist of Morton’s knowledge, and yes, fanfaronade, put so much into words. For the first time we heard from a pioneer who had actually been there. Historians will argue about the truth of what Morton says.

When Ferdinand Jelly Roll Morton sat at the piano in the Library of Congress in May of to begin his monumental series of interviews with Alan Lomax, he spoke of his years on the West Coast with the nostalgia of a man recalling a golden age, a lost Eden.
