Jan 11,  · In , Nat and producer Lee Gillette wanted to do a jazzy/blues type album with Count Basie's big band. The way it worked out, they got the band but, due to contractual reasons, they didn't get the Count. So, 's WELCOME TO THE CLUB has Nat and (almost) the entire Basie band.

'Nat King Cole at the Sands' was recorded live in Las Vegas in Although 'Welcome to the Club' was actually a studio recording, it captures the magic of Coles voice as it sounded on the road. On this second LP, Nat is accompanied by the Count Basie orchestra (minus Basie, who couldnt sit in due to contractual reasons and was replaced by.

This album pairs Nat King Cole's distinctive style of singing with the Count Basie Band (minus the Count due to contractual issues). The result is an album that is anything but pedestrian: energetic vocals, a swinging big band, and just the right balance of sophistication and swagger. What makes this /5(16).

Nat "King" Cole's Welcome to the Club is mastered for the first time completely from recently unearthed stereo masters. Upbeat and brassy, the big band features the Count Basie Orchestra. The songs are a mix of well-known standards and a few gems, including, "Mood Indigo" and "Avalon.".
